T.R.A.P. law requiring additional licensing for abortion clinics

House Bill 937

Sponsored by Rep. Lola Sheldon-Galloway (R - Great Falls)

This bill was passed and signed into law. However, a judge has granted a temporary restraining order against the policy following a lawsuit filed by ACLU of Montana on behalf of All Families Healthcare and Blue Mountain Clinic.

This bill creates additional, unnecessary licensing requirements of abortion clinics in Montana, above and beyond existing requirements and those required of other medical specialties. There is no true necessity for this law and it is not grounded in care for the health, well-being, or safety of abortion patients. Abortion is one of the safest forms of care in the U.S. and is already well-regulated in our state.

‘T.R.A.P.’ stands for Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Providers. They are costly, severe, and medically unnecessary requirements imposed on abortion providers. Often pushed by anti-abortion politicians under the guise of “women’s health,” the real aim of T.R.A.P. laws is to shut down abortion providers and make it more difficult for poeple to access abortion.
