Thankfully this proposal was withdrawn by its sponsor before even receiving a bill hearing, but it would have amended our state constitution to define ‘person’ to include include a fertilized egg, effectively making all abortions at any stage illegal. There were zero exceptions provided in the draft language.
Because it’s a constitutional amendment, Senate Bill 256 would have required ‘Yes’ votes from 2/3 of the entire Legislature (both the House and the Senate) before being placed on the ballot for voters to decide in November 2024.
